St(a)y Sharp! UNBC and the Music Collective

“Let there be music!” exclaims JB Tabing, co-president of UNBC’s newest student-led organization, the Music Collective. Featuring 22 members, the newly formed Collective springs onto campus with affable melodies, gentle rhythms, and warm tones as the semester presses forth into the autumn season.

So, who can join the Music Collective, and what does it offer? “We’re musicians and music lovers,” says Tabing, though these qualities are not necessarily required to join: “The club is for everyone, and our goal is to share music as musicians of UNBC. It’s a way to connect with one another.” The Collective is a place for students, musicians or not, to share a common appreciation for the art of music.

Unifying students through composition and community, the Collective has been active on university grounds at events such as UNBC’s Northern Nights, with many more university performances to come. Tabing details the promising future of the club, explaining that the Collective plans to host more formal events of its own, and that its future ventures may include performances at “clubs or bars” in the Prince George area.

As Tabing puts it, “I believe music is a way to heal, and what I’m most excited about for this club is sharing music with those outside campus who could really use music in their lives.” With this sentiment in mind, the Collective is eager to welcome new members and volunteers for its future shows at Prince George’s local hospital and various elderly care homes. “We’re just waiting for more members to be able to perform for these places, really,” Tabing explains.

So, follow the lilt of seasonal tunes to the Music Collective! As Nietzsche famously put it, “Without music, life would be a mistake,” so avoid the mistake of not checking out the club!
