Super drivers

There is no need to mention the snow and how cold it is outside, as we all have experienced it by now. Winter is a favourite season for many, and I am sure some will see it the same way one day. I mean, I cannot blame anyone for liking winter because personally, when I hear winter, I imagine hot chocolate or a hot cup of tea while wrapped in a very cozy sweater and watching snow fall through the window where the Christmas tree is beside. That warmth and cozy feeling is what winter means to many, not to mention the winter break that we so need as students.

But let’s face it, winter is not just being wrapped up in a cozy blanket at home and losing the sense of time because you snuggled with your pet and the book you are reading is at its climax. Winter is also trying to buy the last-minute gifts for family and friends while looking for safer ways to commute because you can’t just drive in this weather or you do not have a personal car to run the errands. It is also trying to get home from school late at night and not really knowing how to connect your buses because you have only been in Prince George for one semester and always got home while it was bright outside.

And if you find yourself in the latter situation, this is where you really begin to question each and every decision you have made that day. Not only is it cold, but you are on the bus not knowing when to get off to take the bus that will finally drop you near your place. It was one of those days for a certain young man where he just didn’t know what to do.

But behold, for we have our own superheroes. I love to call them super drivers, for if the name didn’t help you connect, they are the transit drivers, yes, the heroes among us. On this particular day, the young man who was troubled went to ask for help from the hero who was with us. And just as you guessed, this hero added gloves to his suit, for it was a very cold night, and went to speak to the approaching hero getting family and friends home to help my friend because he was heading somewhere near this hero’s route. These two heroes communicated and helped this young man get home.

And that was once again another reminder of how many heroes we have among us and that they are always there. All we have to do is ask for help. For this young man, this day was not going great at all, and I can only imagine how good it felt knowing that there is someone who cares enough to help talk on his behalf to another hero because he knows the town better. You don’t have to fumble your way in trying to make sense while standing near the door of the bus and letting the cold air get in.

This is a special shout out to all the transit drivers and those who gear up when heroes are needed. You rock.

*PS: Based on true events I witnessed.*
