“Inspiring Women Among Us” Event Celebrates Community, Care, and Inclusivity Amidst a Polycrisis Theme

The annual “Inspiring Women Among Us” (IWAU) event at UNBC has returned, gathering students, faculty, and community members together for a week of engaging workshops, talks, and activities centered on this year’s theme: “Caring in a Time of Polycrisis.” From November 13 to 20, participants are invited to explore the concepts of care, resilience, and community action, focusing on ways to connect amidst complex global and local challenges.

With a variety of events both in-person and online, the IWAU schedule (Here is the link to it!) offers something for everyone. Activities range from yoga and creative workshops to panels and seminars that touch on environmental concerns, mental health, inclusivity, and gender equity. These sessions aim to spark conversations on how to build inclusive communities, empower individuals, and advocate for change within academic, personal, and public spheres.

One highlight of this year’s event is a focus on self-care  and community-building, acknowledging the unique struggles faced by students and staff in recent years. Events like workshops on eco-anxiety, art as a tool for connection, and panel on women in science provide participants with meaningful insights and practical tools to create safe and friendly spaces for everyone. This approach emphasizes care not only for oneself but also for the broader community and environment.

The IWAU initiative continues to be a symbol of unity and empowerment, bringing together individuals from various backgrounds to discuss shared challenges, particularly those affecting women and underrepresented groups. The event also celebrates diversity through performances, discussions on reproductive rights, the Trans Day of Remembrance, and other inclusive gatherings. By promoting awareness on these issues, IWAU encourages dialogue and fosters a supportive environment where students and community members can openly engage.

Support from a wide network of partners, including the City of Prince George, Northern Women’s Centre, UNBC’s Office of Equity and Inclusion, and many more, underscores the collaborative spirit of this event. These partnerships reflect IWAU’s mission to reach across the campus and beyond, creating an inclusive space where participants can feel seen, heard, and connected.

For those looking to stay informed, IWAU is active across social media, providing updates and insights through Instagram (@inspiringwomenamongus), Twitter (@IWAU_Events), and Facebook (InspiringWomenUNBC). The official website, www.iwau.ca, also offers a full overview of the event schedule and provides resources for anyone wishing to engage further with the initiative.

As IWAU unfolds, students and community members alike are encouraged to participate, connect, and carry forward the week’s themes of compassion and collective resilience into their daily lives.
