Exploring Possibilities: UNBC Discovery Day 2025

The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) came alive with excitement on Friday, October 24, 2025, as students, families, and community members gathered on the Prince George campus for Discovery Day 2025, an event dedicated to exploration, inspiration, and connection.

Under the theme “Exploring Possibilities,” this year’s open house welcomed hundreds of visitors eager to learn more about what makes UNBC one of Canada’s best small universities. The atmosphere was filled with curiosity and energy as guests toured classrooms, laboratories, and facilities, meeting faculty, staff, and current students along the way.

From the vibrant Discovery Hub in the Teaching and Learning Atrium at Building 10 to guided tours of the Schools of Nursing and Engineering, Discovery Day offered a hands-on glimpse into the university experience. Prospective students engaged directly with professors, explored cutting-edge research spaces, and experienced how learning at UNBC extends beyond the classroom into real-world problem-solving.

The event also showcased UNBC’s broad academic offerings, featuring more than 70 degree programs across science, healthcare, humanities, and natural resources. Visitors were encouraged to envision their academic and career futures in a place that combines world-class education with a close-knit campus environment. Presentations on campus life, student supports, and career pathways highlighted how UNBC equips students for success both academically and professionally.

Interim President Dr. Bill Owen noted that Discovery Day serves as more than just an introduction to university life. “Talking with some of the parents, some of them are still surprised at the gem that we have here,” he said. “It’s good to be able to showcase what we have in our own backyard.” Dr. Owen also emphasized the importance of early research involvement at UNBC, where undergraduates can collaborate with faculty on publications and community-based projects, opportunities that are rare at larger institutions.

Throughout the day, visitors stopped by interactive displays featuring student clubs, academic departments, and research initiatives. Faculty and staff from various disciplines were on hand to answer questions and provide insight into programs, scholarships, and future career opportunities.

The event wasn’t all academics. Discovery Day maintained its welcoming and festive spirit with snacks, music, and friendly conversation. Several prize draws, including free tuition waivers, added to the excitement. The sense of community was unmistakable, reflecting UNBC’s ongoing commitment to providing a supportive environment where students can thrive.

For many participants, Discovery Day was an opportunity to learn, to belong, and to imagine themselves as part of UNBC’s growing community of learners and innovators. Whether attendees were high school students planning their next step, parents exploring educational options, or professionals considering a career change, the day offered something for everyone.

As the event concluded, one message resonated clearly: UNBC continues to stand out as a place where potential meets purpose. It is a university deeply connected to its community, devoted to research and sustainability, and dedicated to shaping the future of Northern British Columbia and beyond.
